Chief Financial Officer
Sonja Velez is the Foundation’s Chief Financial Officer overseeing financial planning and analysis, accounting and tax, and financial policies and reporting. She serves as liaison to the audit, investment, finance, and program-related investment committees of the Board.
Prior to joining The San Francisco Foundation, Sonja worked as an independent management consultant for mission-driven organizations including her previous employer, The Democratic Voice of Burma, where she served as Chief Financial Officer while living in Burma.
Before working in Asia, Sonja was Vice President of Corporate Planning and Analysis at Charles Schwab in San Francisco. Her 13 year tenure at Schwab included managing the firm’s assets and liabilities through an extraordinary time of growth and financial market stress as Vice President of Treasury Balance Sheet Management, and leading analysis of client acquisition, retention, and operational strategies as Vice President of Individual Investor Finance.
She holds an MBA from UC Berkeley and an MFA in Writing from the University of San Francisco, along with an undergraduate degree in International Relations from UC Davis.
