Fred-Blackwell SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Foundation announced the appointment of Fred Blackwell as CEO. He will be the fifth CEO in the Foundation’s 66 year history. “We are thrilled to have Fred coming on board to lead the Foundation into the 21st century,” said Andy Ballard, Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. “His commitment to social and economic equity, combined with two decades of nationally recognized leadership in the nonprofit and public sectors, make him the ideal CEO to build on our role as an innovative and progressive force for positive social change in the Bay Area.”

Blackwell, an Oakland native, most recently served as the City Administrator for the City of Oakland after joining the City of Oakland in 2011 as the Deputy City Administrator. He previously was the Executive Director of the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency and Director of the Mayor’s Office of Community Development in San Francisco.

“I am honored to be selected as the new CEO of The San Francisco Foundation,” said Blackwell. “I have been in the orbit of the Foundation since I was a teenager, and have both worked for and with institutions funded by The San Francisco Foundation. I am deeply committed to the mission and am eager to leverage and grow its leadership in building and developing strong communities throughout the Bay Area.”

Blackwell was a TSFF Fellow in Neighborhood and Community Development in 1996 and subsequently managed a multi-year comprehensive community initiative for the Foundation in West Oakland. He also served as the Director of the Making Connections Initiative for the Annie E. Casey Foundation in the Lower San Antonio neighborhood of Oakland.

Blackwell will start as CEO this June.

Blackwell has served on boards including California Redevelopment Association, Urban Habitat Program, LeaderSpring, SPUR and Leadership Excellence. He holds a Master’s degree in City Planning from UC Berkeley and a Bachelor’s degree in Urban Studies from Morehouse College.
