SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The San Francisco Foundation today announced a gift of $4 million to the Puerto Rico Community Foundation (PRCF) to support the island’s relief efforts following Hurricane Maria. The gift ranks as one of the largest donations to date in support of recovery efforts, and it comes at a critical time, when donations have waned despite the fact that the recovery process is far from complete.

The gift, which comes from The San Francisco Foundation and its donors, supports PRCF’s Community Recovery Fund, which has helped local organizations recover from Hurricane Maria by providing water purifiers, power generators, and meals to communities throughout the island. Today’s announcement brings the total amount that PRCF has raised for the recovery efforts to $8 million.

The San Francisco Foundation’s gift will bolster the following areas of PRCF’s recovery work:

  • Water and Food: supporting the community to build and manage water infrastructure, while also strengthening capacity to produce short-term food security.
  • Energy: supporting the community to build and manage a renewable energy structure, propelled by sun, water, wind and other sources.
  • Housing: supporting community housing development organizations that address housing rehabilitation and construction.
  • Economic Development: strengthening community incubators to propel economic development.

As a place-based community foundation, The San Francisco Foundation has a deep understanding of how local communities are affected when disasters strike. As such, we reach out to other regions during extreme times of need, in the same way that our counterparts reach out to us when the San Francisco Bay Area experiences a disaster.
