Ali Sirkus Brody
Senior Advisor, Philanthropy and Engagement
Why do you do what you do?
For the past 20 years, I’ve been committed to dismantling inequity. In my positions in government, nonprofits and philanthropy, I’ve seen some fantastic efforts that have resulted in system-level change. And I’ve seen some well-intentioned efforts that have ended up doing more harm than good, particularly when it comes to wealthy white folks funding social justice initiatives. This is where I feel I can have the greatest impact: inspiring progressive donors to show up as anti-racist allies and co-conspirators to people of color working on issues about which they care deeply.
What drew you to the foundation?
SFF is at the vanguard of community foundations working on equity. Having made in-roads in their grantmaking and with some of the internal operations, SFF is poised to work more closely with donors to help them understand equity and equity-based practices in philanthropy.
How would you describe your role?
I am a coach, teacher, learner and guide. I partner with donors on their philanthropic journeys and connect them to giving that brings them meaning and purpose. Working with clients of privilege, I introduce and uphold social justice lenses and inspire them to apply equity-based practices around power. When working with clients I meet them where they are, without judgment, and ensure that we make room for discovery as well as for challenging conversations.
Are you involved in any volunteer activities?
I’m a member of the Women’s Catalytic Fund, a giving circle that puts resources into the hands of women leading frontline organizing in the movement for gender justice.
