When the Trump administration slashed funding for arts organizations in 2025, the San Francisco Foundation saw an urgent need to support small arts groups that have a big impact in the Bay Area and beyond.

Late last year, the community foundation, which funds a broad range of equity-oriented nonprofit organizations in the Bay Area’s five core counties, announced $750,000 in grants to sustain the region’s vibrant arts community in response to cuts by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The initiative reflects what a spokesperson called the foundation’s rapid, collaborative and community-driven approach to a federal funding crisis that has destabilized dozens of Bay Area arts organizations. The foundation says it’s a way of leveraging donor generosity to meet emergency funding shortfalls and ensure that local communities’ cultural organizations continue to survive and thrive.
