The Great Communities Collaborative (GCC) has begun an exciting new chapter. As part of the San Francisco Foundation’s broader evolution, GCC will be transitioning to a new home at The Center at Sierra Health Foundation. What makes this transition so energizing is just how closely Sierra Health Foundation and its Center align with GCC’s mission and way of working. For decades, Sierra Health Foundation has shown deep commitment to advancing health, racial equity, and community‑driven change through partnership, convening, and strategic grantmaking. Their track record of supporting complex, cross‑sector initiatives and centering community voice makes them an exceptional home for GCC’s continued evolution.
We believe this step positions the GCC for a strong and promising next chapter, one that builds squarely on GCC’s mission, values, and long‑standing impact.
For more than 20 years, the Great Communities Collaborative has advanced a bold regional vision—one in which housing, transportation, land use, climate resilience, and racial equity are understood as deeply interconnected, and in which communities have a real voice in shaping their futures. Through GCC, funders came together to pool resources, community organizations helped shape regional policy conversations, and multisector collaboratives took root across the Bay Area, inclusive of all nine counties. GCC demonstrated what’s possible when partners work across geography and sector to advance equitable, community‑driven solutions.
GCC has always been about what’s possible when philanthropy works together—aligning resources, centering community voice, and tackling challenges at a regional scale. We’re proud to have helped steward this collaborative for more than two decades.
This transition is an opportunity for GCC’s model, relationships, and impact to grow in new and powerful ways.
I also want to honor the former and current GCC staff. Their leadership, care for this work, and for one another, are the reasons GCC has had the influence and longevity it has enjoyed. They have stewarded this collaborative with integrity and purpose through moments of opportunity and challenge alike, and their contributions have left a lasting mark on the region. Thank you for your partnership, your leadership, and your commitment to working across boundaries in service of a more just and connected region.
