Australia Fires and Puerto Rico Earthquakes: How to Help

Australia Fires and Puerto Rico Earthquakes: How to Help

Since mid-December, more than 100 fires have ravaged Australia’s eastern coast, taking with them dozens of lives, 25 million acres of land, and more than a billion animals. The destruction has been catastrophic. At the same time, halfway around the world, Puerto Rico was hit by two massive earthquakes in two days—a 5.8 magnitude quake on Jan. 6 and a 6.4 magnitude quake the following morning. In a place still recovering from Hurricane Maria two years ago, the damage—and the threat to residents’ sense of safety—is felt throughout the island.

There are ways to help with recovery efforts. We recommend contributing to the following disaster relief funds, which we have researched and vetted:

  1. Center for Disaster Philanthropy (Global Recovery Fund)
  2. GlobalGiving (Australian Wildfire Relief Fund)
  3. World Wildlife Fund (to support work relating to the Australian bushfires)
  4. Puerto Rico Community Recovery Fund
