Inside Philanthropy: Immigrant Families Under Attack Get a Boost as California Funders Work with the State
California is home to almost 11 million immigrants, making it the state with the highest number in the U.S. As in other states, but often on a much larger scale, immigrants in California have felt the consequences of President Donald Trump’s mass detention and deportation agenda. Children have been separated from their families. People have avoided going to work, school, and to buy groceries, even foregoing medical attention out of the very real fear of being deported — or worse.
[…] In response to the crisis, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced in February a new public-private partnership between his office and three philanthropic institutions — the California Community Foundation (CCF), San Francisco Foundation (SFF) and the Sierra Health Foundation — to help provide relief for immigrant families impacted by the federal government’s actions.
[…] The partnership emerged from monthly calls between the governor’s office and California’s philanthropic leaders as part of an ongoing conversation on immigrant communities’ needs, said SFF’s chief impact officer, Judith Bell.
