News Round-Up: Coalition Petition to CA Attorney General

San Francisco Foundation, along with coalition co-chair LatinoProsperity and more than 50 other organizations, filed an administrative petition with the office of California Attorney General Rob Bonta requesting his intervention in OpenAI’s planned conversion from nonprofit to for-profit status.

OpenAI received pushback on its transition plans from Meta and some philanthropic leaders, including the San Francisco Foundation, who raised concerns with the state attorney general’s office. […] On Monday, San Francisco Foundation said it continues to hold concerns about OpenAI’s transition.

“While we are glad to see that OpenAI is responding to the questions that have been raised about their proposed restructuring, its announcement today doesn’t address the fundamental problem at issue: the independence from profit-seeking of the OpenAI nonprofit,” Fred Blackwell, CEO of the San Francisco Foundation, said in a statement.

A coalition of California-based charities […] renewed its call for California’s attorney general to investigate and questioned whether OpenAI’s planned new business structure would carry out its charitable mission.

“If OpenAI is truly committed to benefiting humanity, it should transfer its charitable assets over to an independent public trust completely separate from any for-profit interests,” said a statement from Fred Blackwell, CEO of the San Francisco Foundation.
