California is a state built by people from everywhere, where progress is forged in public debate, and dissent is a civic duty. So, when the National Guard is sent against one of our cities, we recognize the tactic for what it is: a deliberate effort to inflame, escalate, and silence. This is more than a smokescreen; it’s a clear step toward authoritarianism, and it is a line we will meet with resolute peaceful resistance.
Make no mistake; these authoritarian actions will not stop in Los Angeles and will not be contained to any single issue. They strike at the heart of our democracy: the right to gather, to speak freely, and to protest.
In the Bay Area, we don’t just believe in these rights in the abstract; they are part of the DNA of our community. In times of controversy, our answer must always be more voices, not fewer.
We are a nation built on laws, and immigrants have rights under the laws of this country: To defend immigrants is to defend democracy.
Immigrants are our neighbors, our colleagues, our family—they are us. With each generation, immigrants have woven the vibrant economic, cultural, and social fabric of California. They are not a threat to be policed; they are the very people who continually build and better this nation.
As a community foundation committed to social justice, we will meet this moment by doing what we do best. We will direct resources to the organizations protecting civil liberties and providing deportation defense, from LA to the Bay Area and across the state, and we will add our voices to those advocating for democracy and inclusion.
This work requires all of us to work in partnership with funders, nonprofits, and advocacy groups. We ask our donors to make a courageous gift to ensure legal and advocacy groups have the resources they need. We ask our nonprofit partners to continue your brave work, knowing we have your back. And we ask every member of our community to use your voice to reject these politics of fear.
We will not be scared into silence. Together, we will forge a future where everyone belongs.
In solidarity,
Judith and Fred
