SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The San Francisco Foundation announces today that Sheryl Wong and Ophelia Basgal have been appointed chair and vice chair, respectively, of the foundation’s Board of Trustees. Their appointments are effective for one year.
“Sheryl and Ophelia bring with them a tremendous amount of expertise in community philanthropy,” says Fred Blackwell, CEO of the San Francisco Foundation. “We are incredibly fortunate to have them assume these leadership roles at the foundation.”
Ms. Wong has served on the foundation’s board since 2012, and has served as its vice chair since 2017. Her longtime civic leadership includes work with education, arts and health care organizations throughout the Bay Area. She is a former board chair of the Oakland Museum of California Foundation, and a former director of the Bay Area Tumor Institute. She currently serves as a trustee of the UC Berkeley Foundation.
“I’m proud to assume the chair of the San Francisco Foundation board,” says Ms. Wong. “I know I follow in the footsteps of many outstanding community leaders. I look forward to working with my fellow board members, Fred Blackwell, and staff in furthering the work of the foundation.”
Ms. Basgal has served on the foundation’s board since 2013. She is a visiting scholar at the UC Berkeley Terner Center for Housing Innovation and a senior executive coach with InclusionINC, which specializes in inclusion and diversity solutions. Previously, she was the regional administrator of the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Region IX (Pacific/Hawaii), and the vice president of community relations at the Pacific Gas and Electric Company.
“The San Francisco Foundation is known in the philanthropic sector for its innovation, leadership and commitment to creating more equitable communities,” says Ms. Basgal. “I’m delighted to assume a board leadership role of such a dynamic organization.”
The foundation’s outgoing board chair, Duncan Robertson, will continue to serve on the board.
