The San Francisco Foundation is pleased to serve as a philanthropic partner for the San Francisco Fire Department, which launched a $20 million fundraising campaign to purchase approximately 10 new fire engines to replace the department’s aging apparatus. In collaboration with the City of San Francisco, the San Francisco Foundation established the SFFD Emergency Preparedness Fund and is accepting and administering charitable contributions for this effort.
According the Fire Department, a third of the current fleet is more than 20 years old, which the fire department says hampers its ability to fight blazes – particularly those caused by a major earthquake (read more in the San Francisco Chronicle). Earlier this year, the City of San Francisco passed an ordinance allowing Mayor Daniel Lurie, Fire Chief Dean Crispen, and city/county executive staff to raise private funds to fast track procurement of the rigs.
