Once a month in Berkeley, a group of parents and children jump, spin, and sway together in a Luna Dance & Creativity family dance class. These classes don’t just provide lessons in movement; they also provide opportunities for connection and create spaces for belonging. From the laughter echoing through a community center, and a child’s confidence blooming, to a parent feeling seen, arts organizations shine a light on the power of creativity to unite, strengthen families, and heal communities. But when sudden cuts to federal funding were announced, programs that foster these connections faced an uncertain future.
In 2025, arts organizations across the country faced sudden funding cuts from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). From grassroots groups to major arts institutions across disciplines, including dance, visual arts, and theater, the impact was felt across the spectrum. When a group of SFF donors learned about the cuts, one question sparked action: What can we do to help?
With a matching grant from an anonymous donor, SFF donors raised and distributed over $750,000 to Bay Area arts organizations impacted by the halt in funding.
“When we learned about NEA grant cuts and the NEA relief campaign at SFF, we knew it was a way for us to help in this time of need,” said SFF donors Laura and Mike.
Bay Area Arts Strengthen Communities
The connection and creativity of Bay Area arts continue to strengthen communities across the region, and the generosity and vision of our donors played an integral role.
The funds raised ensured local arts organizations continue to stand as beacons of hope and provide spaces for healing, transformation, expression, and acceptance. SFF’s long-time partners faced challenges due to funding cuts, but with renewed support, they overcame them.
