Choi Man Wong
Maintenance Assistant
Why do you do what you do? What drew you to the foundation?
I was born in Taishan (Toisan), in China’s Guangdong province, before moving to Hong Kong. After having children, my wife and I decided to move to San Francisco to join her relatives. I first worked in a garment factory, but most of those factories closed and left San Francisco around that time. Self Help for the Elderly, a nonprofit organization (and longtime foundation partner) helped me find this job in 1991. When I started, I never thought I’d be here for this long. But the foundation provides me with a good salary and benefits. Plus, the staff is so nice and very diverse. Working here feels like being part of a big family.
How would you describe your role?
I help provide a comfortable environment for our staff and guests. I make sure that the office is neat and clean, and that our supplies are always in stock. Often times I also help set up and clean up before and after our meetings.
