Ling Woo Liu
Director, Marketing and Communications
Why do you do what you do?
I’m here because of heroes in my community — those who fought exclusion and internment and helped assert our place in this country. I’m here because of heroes in my own family, who fled war with nothing but coins sewn into their clothes, who lost their jobs because of the way they looked and spoke, and who fought for this country even when their fellow soldiers questioned whether or not they were American. I feel a deep sense of responsibility to leverage the privileges that these heroes have afforded me to help seek justice and dignity for those around me.
What drew you to the foundation?
I was drawn to the foundation’s demonstrated commitment — throughout the entire organization — to equity, inclusion and diversity.
How would you describe your role?
I help tell our story in a way that compels our audience to feel the importance of our work and inspires them to act.
Are you involved in any volunteer activities?
I volunteer as an admissions interviewer for my alma mater, the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, to help cultivate new storytellers who are committed to truth and to shining light on untold stories.
