Mark Doherty
Senior Director of Investments
Why do you do what you do? What drew you to the foundation?
I had been living in San Francisco for 20 years before moving to London for a brief stint. When I returned, I was struck by how the Bay Area’s divide — between the haves and the have nots — had become even more severe. That’s when I remember seeing the foundation’s equity agenda announcement, and I thought, how great that they’ve modernized their mission and connected it to the community’s current challenges.
How would you describe your role?
I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to help the foundation intentionally invest its resources in ways that support its equity agenda. I oversee all of the foundation’s investments, including our endowment, donor advised funds, Program-Related Investments Fund and Mission-Related Investing Program. Through our prudent stewardship of $1.5 billion, we enable our program team and donors to be more impactful with their philanthropy.
