Equity Grants Open Cycle

Equity Grants Open Cycle

An Update on Our 2021 Open Cycle

Both COVID-19 and the growing call for racial justice continue to impact the nonprofit sector. 2020 has underscored our collective work to advance racial equity and economic inclusion is more important than ever. The San Francisco Foundation has an increased responsibility to provide sufficient and sustained funding to help our existing equity grantees weather these turbulent times.

As such, we have made the difficult decision not to offer an Equity Grants Open Cycle in 2021. This decision allows us to deepen our relationship with current grant partners through larger, multi-year general support grants. We also plan to continue streamlining our grantmaking processes, reducing the burden on applicants and grantees, and most importantly, listening to and learning from the community. In the spring of 2021, we will announce our decision regarding a 2022 Equity Grants Open Cycle.

As a community foundation, we remain committed to keeping our doors open to local nonprofits. We continue to offer other open funding opportunities, host community listening sessions and convenings, and offer online trainings for the nonprofit community. To get updates on these events, please follow us on Facebook and Twitter and sign up for our mailing list.

While we shelter in place and work remotely, we remain eager to meet new organizations and leaders, deepen our relationships with existing grantees, and continue to listen and learn from the community. If you want to learn more about our grant programs, seek advice on whether your work is a fit for our grants, or share an update with us, please email programs[at]sff.org.

2020 Equity Grants Open Cycle

We are proud to support our 2020 Equity Grants Open Cycle grantees in their work to advance racial equity and economic inclusion in the Bay Area. Altogether we issued $5.7 million to 85 organizations that are engaged in specific strategies that we prioritized in this funding cycle. We thank the 328 organizations that submitted an application and encourage you to email programs[at]sff.org should you have any questions about our funding decisions. View our 2020 Equity Grants Open Cycle Grantees

Centering Applicants in Our Grantmaking

In 2019we partnered with Justice Funders to facilitate a series of nonprofit focus groups to help inform and improve our grantmaking process. These highly interactive sessions provided us with honest feedback on our funding strategies and application process. We took this feedbackmade adjustments to our application process and requirements, and significantly reduced the time and energy that applicants needed to apply for a grant

For once, I look forward to applying to this grant because it won’t feel like a chore,” wrote Beto Ortiz-Silva of 67 Sueños, who participated in our 2019 focus groups and wrote about his experience: I Am Valued: Helping SFF Center Nonprofits in its Grantmaking.
